The Takeuchi TB285 excavator has proven itself to be the Goldilocks of excavators – just right for so many of the jobs we tackle here in Australia. It’s that sweet spot between size and power, perfectly suited for a wide range of applications. We’ve been particularly impressed with its versatility, thanks to features like the adjustable service flow settings, load sensing system, and customizable joystick configurations. These make it adaptable to almost any task you throw at it.
You might expect an 8.5-tonne machine to be productive, but the TB285 has genuinely surprised us with its output. It punches well above its weight class. It’s a real workhorse.
When it comes to maintenance, the TB285 shines. The wide-opening engine cover and gas-lift-assisted side cover make access to components a breeze. Daily checks are quick and easy thanks to conveniently located sight gauges. The ground-level fuel filling and factory-installed electric refueling pump with auto cut-off are real time-savers and prevent messy spills – a huge plus on busy job sites.
Our operators love the spacious, full-sized cabin. There’s nothing “mini” about it. The “float” capability of the dozer blade is a favorite for achieving smooth, professional finishes.
Safety is paramount, and the TB285 doesn’t disappoint. With front and rear lights, a ROPS/FOPS II cabin, standard boom and stick holding valves, and an integrated craning system with audible and visual alarms, it ticks all the boxes. The standard self-adjusting track tensioning eliminates manual adjustments, ensuring optimal performance and extending component life. No more worrying about over-tight or loose tracks!
For rail applications, the TB285 is an ideal platform. Rosenqvist (Sweden) has engineered hydrostatic hirail kits specifically for this model, available through KLH Industries right here in the NT. These kits, designed in collaboration with Takeuchi, ensure seamless integration and guaranteed performance, even in dual gauge configurations.
The TB285’s modest tailswing design strikes a perfect balance. It offers maximum stability with just 550mm of counterweight overhang, enhancing accessibility for servicing and preventing engine bay overcrowding that can lead to overheating in tough Australian conditions.
Weighing in at around 8.6 tonnes with typical Australian specifications (steel tracks with rubber shoes, extra auxiliary hydraulics, etc.), the TB285 is easily transportable at 2200mm overall width. Its 49.6 kW Yanmar diesel engine delivers impressive power for its size.
The standard auxiliary hydraulic output is perfectly suited for tiltrotators, tampers, grabs, and other attachments. Our KLH-spec machines come with the HiFlow option and a second auxiliary circuit, both with modulated controls for precise attachment operation. The main auxiliary output offers three selectable flow rates, while the second has one.
From the factory, you can even specify different stick lengths and a two-piece boom, which can be operated independently or in unison – a fantastic feature for railway work, allowing for easier operation under overhead obstructions, extended reach, and close-up work near the tracks.
The ROPS and FOPS II operator’s cabin is generously sized for operator comfort. We recommend the optional front guard for sleeper grab applications.
The factory-installed craning system, with boom and stick anti-drop valves and a safety overload system with audible and visual alarms, enhances safety when handling suspended loads, reducing stability issues and protecting both operator and machine.
All these features make the TB285 an excellent choice for hirail conversions and a versatile machine for a wide range of applications. Contact us today to discuss how the TB285 can benefit your next project.
